Gear Up For Red Sox Baseball

2010: Third Base

Detroit Tigers vs Seattle Mariners in Seattle

The drama.

The Red Sox Dirt Dawg predicted the following:

Youk would get moved to 3rd and 1st would be platooned by V-Mart, Lowell and Kotchman if need be. Lowell would rotate between DH, 1st and the bench.

It actually would be a solid plan for 2010…not sustainable, but ok for the one season.

Now, Lowell is on the block. And what’s strange is the Sox were going to get almost nothing for him: Minor League catcher Max Ramirez. And the Sox would have to pay the majority of Lowell’s salary for 2010.

What is this? Lowell will be 36 in 2010, and certainly not the World Series MVP caliber player he was in 2007, but WTF Theo?!?!?!?! Why are you giving this guy away and paying the Rangers to take him?

RedSox.com reported the organization wanted to upgrade at 3rd and wanted to bring in free agent Adrián Beltré. By necessity, Lowell needed to be removed. Okay… but for Beltré? His great claim to fame since 2004 is getting cracked in the nuts while not wearing a cup at 3rd, being accused of doping, and appealing his own checked swings.

And he’s represented by Satan’s maidservant, Scott Boras… which means he’ll want a 5-6 year contract for way too much money. I can’t even begin to think what a disaster that signing will be if it happens.

And then this morning the news is Lowell’s thumb is holding up the Rangers trade. And I couldn’t be more thankful. I really believe this trade needs to go away. We have enough problems in left field and at DH for 2010 without Beltré.

As of right now, 3rd is still up in the air…will it be Lowell, Youk, Beltré or some other free agent?

It’s ugly, and like I said, Left Field and DH are only going to get uglier.
