The Red Sox just closed out their 4 game sweep of the hapless Cleveland Indian who finished the season at a very ugly 65-97. The series included two Grand Slams: one by V-Mart on Saturday, the other by Jed Lowrie today. You read that correctly: Jed Lowrie.
This series has the Sox tuned up nicely for Anaheim, and they finished out the season at an impressive 95-67. And I don’t care what the New York papers say, the Sox are in the race to the World Series. Keep counting them out though, I love to be the big mouth under dog.
• The Red Sox starting pitching looks goooooooood, Beckett notwithstanding. He had a shaky outing against the Indians, going 5 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. He struck out five and walked three. 63 of 98 pitches were for strikes. He’s a little rusty for sure, but I like him as the #2 game starter against Anaheim. Lester will dominate, bouncing right back from his knee injury, and I’m a huge fan of the new and improved Dice-K. (He can make it into the 6th inning now!!)
Buchholz didn’t looks so good today: he was only good for three innings and got lit up for six runs on five hits. That has me nervous, not so much for Anaheim, but New York.
Wakefield is off the roster for the ALDS, more than likely because of his back problems.
• The offense has suddenly learned how to clutch hit. Two Grand Slams in a series, and JD Drew belting in two home runs today after being off for two days. How do you figure?
Granted, hitting dingers off the Indians is like being proud of finally busting open a pinata, but everyone is swinging the bats like it’s 2007.
I really like it when pitchers think they can get Pedroia throwing up and in. Keep it up… he had a two run shot off one of those today, and I’d love to see him peg that rally monkey off his perch next week.
And Ellsbury is a one man game changer. He finished the season with 70 stolen bases. That’s ridiculous. If you don’t think that kind of speed terrifies the opposing team, you should go watch a WNBA game.
Jason Bay finished out the season with 118 RBI’s, 4 behind Mark Texeira of the Yanks. In case you’re wondering, that’s a ton. If we don’t resign him, Theo needs some serious psychoanalysis.
• Our defense is solid all the way around. How many times have we seen Ells lay flat out to make a catch? And how insanely quick is the Gonzo to Pedrioa duo? They make more double plays than a San Fernando Valley video production company.
I am really happy heading into October. The slate gets wiped clean, and the Sox come out of this last four game series with some serious pop.
This article wraps up my coverage of the Red Sox 2009 regular season, but be sure to check out the shennanigans over in the Gear Up For the MLB 2009 Playoffs where I will continually announce that Joe Buck is a propped up mincing ponce!
GO SOX!!
