How sweep it is indeed. The Sox made a joke of A.J. Burnett and Chien-Ming Wang during this series, as both starting pitchers lasted only 2 2/3 innings before being pulled for giving up homers and throwing junk, and went into Thursday night’s game against the Yankees with a 2-0 lead in the regular season series. CC Sabathia came into game 3 looking strong and despite giving up a homer to Papi in the 2nd inning, he stayed in the game and didn’t give up another run until he was pulled in the seventh. The Yankees were up 3-1 going into the 8th inning but in typical fashion, the Sox played great defense and matched the offense in the eigth, scoring 3 runs and shutting the Yankees down to pull out the win and sweep of the Yankees.
Penny, who threw 117 pitches, looked sharp and controlled the tempo of the game. Pedroia and Green made some fantastic plays in the infield, Baldelli had a highlight of the night in centerfield and the Sox straight-up outplayed the Yankees. This was an awesome game to watch, even if you aren’t a Yankees or Sox fan just because of the great defensive plays and the great hits. As a Sox fan, this game was as good as sex. Being down in the 8th to come back and beat NY at Fenway to complete the sweep of the series and watch the Yankees walk away scratching their heads and wondering what the hell happened is the greatest feeling a Sox fan can have. The Sox are looking great even though some players, like Ellsbury, Smoltz and Lowrie are all trying to recover from injuries. Papi seems to have his swing back, Penny has his velocity and control back, Beckett is at the top of his game and the defensive play is looking as sharp as ever.
As for the Yankees, well, what’s more to say…Yankees Suck!
