You know the story of Jonah, right? He gets on a boat and during the trip a big storm hits the ship. The crew decides he’s the source of their bad luck so they throw his ass overboard, and then go on their way with no more problems.
I hate to say this, but I think the Red Sox have a few Jonahs on the team this year.
And believe me, I do not want to take away from the incredible 11 game run we just went on. The series against the Yankees was an unbelievable spectacle of everything I love about baseball: the comeback from a 6 run deficit in Game 1, the back and forth battle in Game 2, and the “Holy cow I can’t believe I just saw that” home plate steal by Ellsbury in Game 3. Pettite is still trying to pick his jaw up.
And then on to Cleveland, where we keep the ball rolling. . . until last night.
I know this comes across as superstitious nonsense, but. . . I’m no fan of Dice, and we started the streak once he went on the DL. Coincidence? Absolutely.
So guess who came back into the lineup last night? Your favorite shortstop and mine. . . NOW BATTING: Julio Lugo. Coincidence? Ehhhhh. . .
We grind out a brutal game, and then the ball gets dropped on a routine tag out at first and we lose.
I’ll also say I think the Red Sox are a strong enough team to support one full time Jonah. And as much as we love him for his hitting in the post season, NESN could save a few bucks by making an audio drop that says “JD Drew strikes out looking.”
But two (or three) Jonahs? No team can withstand it. Am I the only one who hopes Lugo or Drew stubs a toe on the way into the dugout so I can avoid this feeling that we are travelling with a cloud over our heads?
